Education & Workforce Development
As part of St. Mary’s Center’s core mission to break down barriers for our families experiencing homelessness and intergenerational poverty, we have integrated education and employment programming to help promote and provide educational and workforce development opportunities for families living at St. Mary’s Center.
By embedding education and employment programming directly within our residential programs, St. Mary's Center breaks down barriers to access and makes transitions for families as seamless as possible.
The program model offers a multi-pronged approach: Providing career advancement and educational workshops, career exploration opportunities with leading organizations in the area, as well as providing financial support for our residents to attend college courses and certificate programs.
The components include:
- Workshops. Enhancing the existing group workshop structure in our residential programs to include educational and career advancement workshops focused on three key areas of financial literacy, basic computer skills, and work readiness and soft skills, including resume building, interview preparation, career exploration, communication, and presentation skills.
- Career exploration. We work in collaboration with leading organizations in the Boston area to create opportunities for our residents to enter not just jobs, but promising careers leading to long-term economic mobility.
- Scholarships. Offering financial support for our mothers and fathers in our programs to attend programs offsite that they have expressed interest in pursuing with support from their Case Managers. This scholarship program provides the necessary financial supports to our families on their personal education and employment journeys, including college programs, certificate programs, and/or apprenticeships.
