Neighbors Supporting Neighbors

SMC20140605-0516-LSt. Mary’s Center was honored to partner with Dorchester’s own residents, professionals, and elected officials with what began as a volunteer community service event and ended with a second fundraising event–Neighbors Supporting Neighbors. Dorchester volunteers arrived at St. Mary’s Center on January 3rd for newly appointed Mayor of Boston Martin J. Walsh’s inaugural weekend of community service. The committed volunteer group went above and beyond as they braved a Nor’easter and spent that day painting and cleaning the cafeteria and conference room, and even springing into action as a pipe burst, without hesitation mopping up floors, grabbing waste baskets, and assisting with emergency repairs!

Compelled to make a difference these volunteers launched the Neighbors Supporting Neighbors event, and they also became ambassadors for our mission and true friends of St. Mary’s Center. On June 5th, 2014 they hosted the Neighbors Supporting Neighbors fundraiser, All Roads Started at St. Margaret’s: A Community Celebration for St. Mary’s Center for Women and Children. The event raised more than $70,000 for our programs and services.

SMC20140605-0251-LWe are forever grateful to the host committee of esteemed elected officials, including Mayor Walsh and Boston City Councilor Frank Baker, our passionate event co-chairs, James Baker and Sally Cahill, our tireless event committee and everyone who generously supported the event and St. Mary’s Center for Women and Children. Each and every person came together to embody the true spirit and meaning of Neighbors Supporting Neighbors.

The committee continues to support St. Mary’s Center and our families through financial and in-kind contributions and volunteer assistance. St. Mary’s Center benefits from being a center for collaboration in the heart of a loyal and dedicated community devoted to giving back and helping others. Through the help of Neighbors Supporting Neighbors we are able to further sustain our programs and services that change lives and improve the emotional well-being, educational achievements, and employment opportunities of the families we serve.
